Das Instrument epidemiologischer Forschung ist die Beobachtung, nicht das Experi ment. Diese Datenstruktur be stimmt das methodische Vorgehen: Es wird ein umfangreiches Beobachtungkollektiv bentigt, eine Vielzahl von Variablen ist zu bercksichtigen und es empfiehlt sich, eine Kontrollpopulation oder einen Kontrollzeitraum ahne Exposition einzu beziehen. Das Ergebnis der epidemiologischen Analyse ist (im positiven Fall) eine Assoziation zwischen den EinfluB und ZielgrBen, wobei die Mglichkeit einer kausalen Interpretation nicht nur vam Grad der statistischen ADsicherung sondern vor allem von der Konsistenz der Ergebnisse und ihrer Reproduzierbarkeit in unabhngigen Untersuchungen abhngt. Zustzlich zu diesen allgemeinen Charakteristika epidemiologischer Forschung kommt in der Umweltepidemiologie hinzu, daB die Risiken der EinfluBgrBen seien es Luftschadstoffe, Rckstnde in Lebensmitteln oder radioaktive Strahlung hufig niedrig im Vergleich zu anderen individuellen Risiken (z. B. Rauchen, Ernhrungs gewohnheiten) sind. Auf der anderen Seite ist die Zahl Betroffener in der Regel groB.
