El rayo, fenmeno elctrico generado por la naturaleza, ha sido un tema de gran inters en el estudio cientfico, este es el fenmeno meteorolgico ms temido, estudiado e interpretado por todas las culturas de la tierra a travs de todos los tiempos. Su estudio cientfico tiene sus inicios en 1752 cuando Benjamn Franklin desarrollo una tcnica emprica provocando la descarga con una varilla de mayor altura que la existente entre nube y tierra, atrayendo de esta manera el lder de la descarga elctrica atmosfrica. El tema de proteccin contra descargas elctricas atmosfricas en cambio se demor un poco ms en ser investigado, slo hasta 1980 se empez a avanzar en este tema a nivel internacional. Se han estudiado y creado mtodos de proteccin contra este fenmeno debido a los daos que ste ha causado por el impacto que provoca en tierra. Estos mtodos se han diseado para implementar en lneas de transmisin, subestaciones elctricas, en edificaciones, entre otros. Las metodologas de proteccin contra el impacto directo de la descarga aplicadas a edificios son las de mayor inters en este proyecto.
