Die Migrationsforschung geht seit jeher davon aus, dass Menschen wandern, weil sie nach einer Verbesserung ihrer Lebensbedingungen streben. Gerade in unseren Wohlfahrtsgesellschaften, in denen der Wohnort nicht aus blanker Not verlassen wird, stellt sich jedoch die Frage nach der relativen Bedeutung struktureller Bedingungen. Sind nicht bestimmte Ereignisse im Lebenslauf wichtiger fr den Entschluss zugunsten eines Wohnortwechsels? Diesen Fragen wird anhand eines handlungstheoretisch fundierten Modells des Migrationsprozesses nachgegangen. Dabei kommt dem besseren Verstndnis des genauen Ablaufs dieses Prozesses eine Schlsselrolle zu. Es wird gezeigt, dass am Beginn die Einschtzung steht, persnliche Ziele seien andernorts besser zu verwirklichen, dass die Entscheidung zugunsten des Wegzugs durch bestimmte biographische Ereignisse forciert wird, und dass die Umsetzung des Wohnortwechsels mageblich von der Verfgung ber finanzielle und soziale Ressourcen abhngt.
