Defoe hatte ursprnglich puritanischer Geistlicher werden sollen, entschied sich dann aber fr die kaufmnnische Laufbahn, wo er allerdings bald scheiterte. Er versuchte sich in mehreren Berufen. Aus dem Wunsch heraus, die praktischen Lebensbedingungen seiner Landsleute zu verbessern, gab er nacheinander mehrere Zeitschriften heraus und verfate zahlreiche zum Teil satirische ArtikeL Ein heftiger Angriff gegen die religise Unduldsamkeit der anglikanischen Kirche brachte ihn sogar an den Pranger, wo ihm das Volk jedoch begeistert zujubelte. Nach einem Gefngnisaufenthalt nderte er seinen ursprnglichen Namen (Daniel Foe) in Defoe. Er starb am 26.4.1731 in London
