Die vorliegende Studie ist im Schnittpunkt verschiedener Problem felder und Teildisziplinen der Zeitgeschichte angesiedelt. Sie be handelt zentrale Aspekte des Verhaltnisses von Militar und Ju gend im Staat Hitlers und mochte vor allem den Reichswehrund Wehrmachthistorikern wie der Erziehungsund Bildungsforschung zur NSZeit neue Aufschliisse liefern. Dabei nimmt die Arbeit vor zugsweise die Rolle der Wehrmacht im Schulbereich des Dritten Reiches in den Blick und konzentriert sich auf die Zeit bis 1939/40. Die Untersuchung ist die geringfiigig iiberarbeitete Fassung ei ner Dissertation, die im Sommersemester 1987 von der Philosophi schen Fakultat der Westfalischen WilhelmsUniversitat Miinster angenommen wurde. Meine Forschungen wurden von Prof. Dr. Heinz Gollwitzer kritisch und liberal zugleich betreut. Dafiir danke ich ihm herzlich. Dankbar verpfiichtet fiihle ich mich auch Prof. Dr. HansUlrich Thamer, der das Korreferat iibernahm. Ferner gilt mein Dank den Mitarbeitern der in Anspruch genommenen Ar chive und Bibliotheken. Die FriedrichNaumannStiftung gewahrte mir in groflziigiger Weise ein 3jahriges Promotionsstipendium. Vergessen machte ich nicht den Zuspruch und die Hilfestellung aus dem Kollegenund Freundeskreis in Miinster, wobei Jochen Christoph Kaiser, Thomas Kleinknecht und Rudolf Schlagl beson deren Dank verdienen.
