En el Golfo de Cdiz se produce la emisin de fluidos fros ricos en metano debido a su estratgica configuracin geolgica. Como consecuencia de estas emisiones se han formado espectaculares concentraciones de carbonatos autignicos en forma de chimenea producto de la actividad microbiana por la oxidacin del metano en ausencia de oxgeno y la reduccin de sulfatos. Algunas seales de dicha actividad han quedado reflejadas en el interior de las chimeneas, siendo los minerales de hierro con morfologa framboidal la ms significativa. En este trabajo se han establecido las relaciones entre chimeneas, emisiones de metano y actividad de determinados microorganismos quimiosintticos. Adems, se han inferido las condiciones fsicoqumicas de formacin de las chimeneas y sus variaciones a partir del estudio de agrupaciones framboidales: desde condiciones anxicas y pH altos que favorecen la precipitacin de carbonatos hasta condiciones oxidantes y pH bajos cuando las chimeneas han estado en contacto con el agua marina. Este estudio permitir seguir reinterpretando el registro geolgico y aumentando la importancia de los carbonatos derivados del metano en el mismo.
