Mystery crime fiction written in the Golden Age of Murder[R]eaders who appreciate careful plot development, slightly unusual detectives, and logical denouements will relish this volume. Library JournalImpossible crime stories have been relished by puzzlelovers ever since the invention of detective fiction. Fiendishly intricate cases were particularly well suited to the cerebral type of detective story that became so popular during the golden age of murder between the two world wars. But the tradition goes back to the days of Edgar Allan Poe and Wilkie Collins, and impossible crime stories have been written by such luminaries as Arthur Conan Doyle, G.K. Chesterton, Dorothy L. Sayers and Margery Allingham. This anthology celebrates their work, alongside longhidden gems by less familiar writers. Together these stories demonstrate the range and high accomplishment of the classic British impossible crime story over more than half a century.

This collection from British Library is delightful! The impossible crimes are intriguing and well-written. I found myself trying to solve the mysteries along with the characters. Highly entertaining!

Beautifully Packaged But Flawed Stories
I was excited to dive into this but some stories were predictably dull. The presentation is lovely, so I’ll keep it on my shelf, but don’t expect every tale to be a gripping read. Still, a nice addition to any library.

Interesting but Some Stories Missed the Mark
I enjoyed the concept of these locked-room murders, but a few of the stories felt dragged out. While some kept me on the edge of my seat, others just didn’t do it for me. Still worth the read for any mystery buff.

Perfect for Rainy Days
This crime classics book is just the thing for rainy afternoons! I loved the twisty plots and how each mystery unfolded. It's clearly a collection that puts the best of British crime writing front and center.
