About the Author Brian Atkinson has worked as a freelance photographer for over 20 years in some 65 countries for a variety of magazines, newspapers, and international aid agencies, including the Ottawa Citizen, Canadian Geographic, Equinox, Mdecins Sans Frontires, CARE, and First Steps.Joanne Cadogan is a third generation newspaper publisher. Product Description On a bitterly cold day with a driving wind, Brian Atkinson met three generations of the Williston family of Hardwicke and went out onto the ice of Miramichi Bay to take photos of them smelting. He was looking for story ideas for Canadian Geographic. Something in the character of this family and its patriarch, 75yearold Theodore a survivor of the Escuminac Disaster of 1959 in which 35 fishermen lost their lives, piqued Brian's interest.Many river folk, photos, stories, and adventures later, a book had taken shape: Miramichi: River of Character. This richly illustrated volume brings the character of the Miramichi to life, revealing in images and text the determined originality and vibrant spirit of the people of the Miramichi. From the Inside Flap The Miramichi River has twin origins in the southwest, from its headwaters at Miramichi Lake in the Appalachian Mountains, where it flows into the Lustagoocheech ("good little river") and in the northwest, from the Emunokun ("a beaver hole"). The branches merge, race over rapid runs, broaden, deepen, and rush into the Atlantic.This richly illustrated volume brings the character of the Miramichi River to life, revealing the determined originality and vibrant spirit of its people. Here you'll meet loggers, musicians, guides, craftspeople, a remarkable brother and sister, the owner of a bait shop, survivors of the Escuminac Disaster, and a guy who'd be glad to pour you a pint. Of all the characters assembled here, the mightiest of all, suffusing the people of this region with that tincture that makes them unique, is the river itself.
