A couple of years later the name was licensed to the coincidentally named Brown Shoe Company and a 44yearold midget, Major William Ray, was hired to bring the cartoon character to life, traveling around the country hawking shoes. The first in a planned fictional series focusing on this figure, Misfit Heroes finds Major Ray and his dog reluctantly embarking on an adventure revolving around the attempted theft of the Egyptian deity Osiris's gift to a favored pharaoh, a magical amulet that guaranteed the bearer special insight along with world dominance. Ford's story reflects her considerable immersion into 100yearold Americana and her writing sounds, well, dated. She combines poor little rich kids Tommy and Mary Jane and their family's black chauffeur with a midget and his bulldog and their "darkie" manager into a sleuthing sextet that travels from St. Louis to Kansas City and back trying to find the children's kidnapped father who's also the archaeologist who happens to have the Eye of Osiris. Ford throws in everything but the kitchen sink, including comedy (bungling crooks); motivation ("If it's a hero you see then it's a hero you'll be," Tommy's talking shoes intone); a smattering of archaeology; shameless shilling of Buster Brown shoes; moralizing; and, most annoying, magic through the transformation of the talking Tige from the comic strip into a savior, his telekinetic powers invoked whenever the gang gets into a tight spot.
