From Library Journal Authors Pettifer (a BBC reporter) and Bradley (history, Cambridge Univ.) profile a vocation that is difficult and often dangerous. Their focus is Christian missions, and both the famous (e.g., Mother Theresa, Billy Graham) and the unusual (e.g., Pastor Bonnke) are depicted. They portray how missions attract highly idealistic and altruistic individuals who do immeasurable good, but are unfortunately disparaged by the culturally insensitive charlatans who use their title. The authors touch on the missionary endeavor over the centuries, relating the successes and failures. Modern missions are given special emphasis. The irony of the 20th century call to darkest Europe provides a striking conclusion to a vocation that has gone full circle. This highly readable and fascinating account is enhanced by a vivid array of photos, many in full color. Much of the material in this book was gathered for the BBCTV series of the same title. Highly recommended. Carol J. Lichtenberg, Washington State Univ. Libs., PullmanCopyright 1991 Reed Business Information, Inc. Product Description Examines the traditional and nontraditional work of past and present missionaries in locations ranging from small tribes to large cities, and provides interviews with actual missionaries From Publishers Weekly BBCTV presenters Pettifer and Bradley collaborated on the sixpart series Missionaries and on this mesmerizing book based on it. Vividly written and finely detailed stories about evangelists reach back 2000 years and move forward to modern times, showing how Christianity spread around the world. Catholic or Protestant, supported by churches or independent, the missionaries depicted here chiefly represent selfless caregivers like Albert Schweitzer, Mother Teresa and William Booth, founder of the Salvation Army. In contrast, Pettifer and Bradley cite disgraced Jimmy Swaggart and others who preach for fame and profit. A volume filled with surprises, the book includes descriptions of the authors visits to modern missionaries in Europe and Africa; further appeals to the imagination are arresting illustrations in color and blackandwhite.
