Il vit en France depuis 1965.Ancien directeur du Centre franais d'tudes ymnites (Sanaa) et du dpartement scientifique des tudes contemporaines l'Institut franais du ProcheOrient (Beyrouth), il est actuellement directeur de recherche au CNRS (LAUIIAC). Il a notamment publi Le Cheikh de la nuit : Sanaa, organisation des souks et socit citadine (SindbadActes Sud, 1997),Le Livre et la ville.
