Leymann stellte die These auf, dass statistisch gesehen bei einer Arbeitslebenszeit von dreiig Jahren jeder vierte Erwerbsttige im Laufe seines Berufslebens einmal zum Opfer von Mobbing wird. Mobbing ist ein Modewort fr ein gesellschaftliches Phnomen, das so alt ist wie das gemeinsame Arbeiten der Menschen. Es stammt aus dem Englischen und wurde von den skandinavischen Lndern in die Diskussion eingefhrt. Die Sensibilitt gegenber der Problematik ist in den letzten Jahren in der ffentlichkeit kontinuierlich gestiegen. Arbeits und Sozialwissenschaftler, Mediziner und Vertreter anderer Disziplinen sowie Medien, Gewerkschaften und Krankenkassen haben sich gleichermaen der Mobbingthematik zugewandt. In ihren Berichterstattungen erweist sich das Thema als aktuelle und relevante Problematik fr Wirtschaft und Gesellschaft, da Mobbing nicht nur massive gesundheitliche Schden bei den Betroffenen verursacht, sondern auch betriebs und volkswirtschaftliche Folgen nach sich zieht. Folglich ist Mobbing ein unternehmens und gesellschaftsrelevantes Thema.
