Das Buch vermittelt eine neue Sichtweise auf das Problem des induktiven Lernens. Unter Einbeziehung von Anstzen aus der Wissenschaftstheorie und Psychologie wird eine Konzeption entwickelt, die es maschinell lernenden Systemen ermglicht, auch in komplexen Weltausschnitten zu lernen. Es wird dargestellt, da eine Modellbildung in komplexen Weltausschnitten nur in mehrstufigen Prozeen mglich ist. Innerhalb einer Lernstufe ist der Einsatz von Strategien erforderlich, die auf die Besttigung und Verfeinerung des aktuellen Models ausgerichtet sind. Solche Strategien mssen durch andere, nicht konservative Strategien ergnzt werden, die 'revolutionre' Entwicklungen ermglichen und damit den bergang zu einer neuen Entwicklungsstufe erlauben. Ein maschinell lernendes System, das auf eine solche Weise lernt, stellt eine Reihe von Anforderungen an die Wissensreprsentationskomponente. Diese werden ausfhrlich dargestellt und am Beispiel einer Inferenzmaschine operativ eingelst. Die breite und umfassende Behandlung des Revisionsproblems beim maschinellen Lernen fhrt zu einem Ansatz, der auch in anderen Bereichen der Wissensverarbeitung interessante Konsequenzen haben wird.
