En esta tesis se desarrolla un modelo para aproximar lo que representa, para el sistema educativo en trmino de prdida de recursos, el abandono y el rezago de los estudios. El modelo se sustenta en el supuesto de que el abandono estudiantil depende directamente del tiempo que el alumno tarda en darse de baja. De forma muy intuitiva, se puede aceptar que un estudiante que causa baja en el primer semestre incurre en un coste pequeo, proporcional al corto tiempo que lleva estudiando. Sin embargo, un estudiante que abandona transcurridos unos semestres, al igual que el rezagado, ha utilizado los recursos educativos un tiempo mayor y, por lo tanto, ha generado un mayor coste. El modelo propuesto es la suma ponderada de los costes de abandonar, egresar y de postergar los estudios despus del tiempo considerado como adecuado para concluirlos. El analisis se realiza las licenciaturas de los estudiantes que ingresaron en la cohorte de septiembre de 1997 al Centro Universitario de Ciencias Econmico Administrativas de la Universidad de Guadalajara.
