This text is appropriate for any onesemester junior/senior level course in Modern Algebra, Abstract Algebra, Algebraic Structures, or Groups, Rings and Fields. Durbin has two main goals: to introduce the most important kinds of algebraic structures, and to help students improve their ability to understand and work with abstract ideas. The first six chapters present the core of the subject; the remainder are designed to be as flexible as possible. Durbin covers groups before rings, which is a matter of personal preference for instructors. The course is mostly comprised of mathematics majors, but you will find engineering and computer science majors as well.

This book has a lot of solid information on modern algebra, but I found some sections pretty dense. It’s great for learning the theory, just took me a bit longer to get through certain chapters. Definitely better suited for those with a bit of math background already.

Arrived with a Damaged Cover
I was excited to get 'Modern Algebra: An Introduction', but it arrived with a dented cover. The content seems good, but the physical damage was disappointing. I guess I just expected better packaging during shipping. Hoping to get a replacement soon!

Great Intro to Algebra Concepts
I picked up 'Modern Algebra: An Introduction' to help my daughter with her math homework, and it's been a big hit! The explanations are clear and really accessible for beginners. She’s finding it much easier to grasp the concepts now, and the exercises are super helpful for practice.
