El anlisis de la historia del tabaco permite identificar tendencias sociales, como el avance de la modernizacin, y algunas de sus resistencias. En un mundo secularizado, la necesidad de distinguir entre el bien y el mal en trminos absolutos no slo persiste, sino que es algo caracterstico de una cultura obsesionada con la seguridad y la pureza.
