Il tudie les arts graphiques au College of Arts de Leeds o il obtient un diplme. Peu intress par ses tudes centres sur la publicit, il travaille beaucoup le dessin du corps humain, comme pour exorciser la douleur de la mort soudaine de son pre. Il devient assistant de l'artiste mdical de l'universit de Manchester (dessin de planches anatomiques reproduisant les oprations chirurgicales), runissant ainsi sa passion pour la peinture et sa fascination pour l'intrieur du corps humain. Il dessine ensuite des produits de vente par correspondance mais dteste ce travail publicitaire. Dessinateur de cartes de voeux, cette activit lui permet de vivre et de n'diter que les livres qu'il trouve importants. Il habite une vieille ferme dans le Kent avec sa famille et il est capitaine de l'quipe locale de cricket. Le plus souvent, il est auteurillustrateur. En 2000, il a reu le Hans Christian Andersen Award pour l'ensemble de son travail. Aujourd'hui, ses livres sont traduits dans plus de 40 langues.
