Zumindest manchmal, glauben wir alle, sind wir fur das, was wir tun, moralisch verantwortlich. Ist diese Einstellung wirklich berechtigt? Und welche Bedingungen mussen erfullt sein, damit einem Akteur uberhaupt irgendetwas zugerechnet werden darf? Diese Fragen zahlen zu den am meisten diskutierten der Philosophie. Und sie verweisen auf ein Problemfeld, in dem kaum etwas nicht umstritten ist, weil Unterschiede in Auffassungen uber die Bedingungen moralischer Verantwortlichkeit uberaus eng mit unterschiedlichen Auffassungen uber die angemessene Art der Rechtfertigung unserer Zurechnungspraxis verbunden sind. Inkompatibilisten glauben, dass interne Rechtfertigungen unzureichend sind und dass eine externe, die Zurechnungspraxis als ganze betreffende Rechtfertigung metaphysischer Art sein muss. Sie muss zeigen, dass wir wirklich und wahrhaft fur irgendetwas verantwortlich sein konnen; und das verlangt aus der Sicht des Inkompatibilisten, dass wir unser Wollen, unsere Entscheidungen und unsere Absichten ursprunglich selbst bestimmen konnen dass wir, kurz gesagt, einen freien Willen haben. Diese Sicht der Dinge ist jedoch falsch: Einen freien Willen zu haben ist definitiv keine notwendige Bedingung moralischer Verantwortlichkeit. Das jedenfalls ist die Kernthese dieses Buches. Um das zeigen zu konnen, ist es allerdings nicht ausreichend, darauf hinzuweisen, dass wir auch dann gute Grunde haben konnen, einer Person ihr Handeln zuzurechnen, wenn sie nichts anderes hatte tun konnen. Argumente aus FrankfurtSzenarien leiden daran, dass sie der Intuition der Inkompatibilisten letztlich nicht gerecht werden. Sie lassen noch immer Spielraum fur die Vorstellung, dass eine Person, hatte sie anders handeln konnen, in einem tieferen Sinn fur ihre Tat moralisch verantwortlich ware als wenn sie nicht anders hatte handeln konnen und dass dieser tiefere Sinn eben gerade der genuine Sinn unserer Rede von Zurechenbarkeit ist. Diese Arbeit verschliesst diesen Spielraum. Das wirkliche Problem mit dem Inkompatibilismus besteht nicht darin, dass er zu anspruchsvolle Bedingungen gerechtfertigter Zurechenbarkeit postuliert. Das wirkliche Problem ist einfach dieses: Inkompatibilismus ist inkoharent und kann nicht erklaren, was er zu erklaren beansprucht.
