The history of silk industry in Assam dates back to the 11th Century, when Dharma pal wivited 26 families of weavers to settle in Sualkuchi village in Assam. It become a fullfledged wearing village when Ahoms occupied the area in the middle of 12th century. Muga, the Golden silk of Assam is made to the world by a French traveller Jean Joseph Tavernier(1662). The silk was the royal fabric of Ahom kings who ruled Assam for 6 centuries till 1826. weaving in Assam is one of the largest and oldest industry in Assam. it is a way of life in Assam since time immemorial. Muga silk is consider as the most important fabric in Assamese tradition.
