Es una fotografa de la realidad que viven las mujeres ocupadas en puestos de jerarqua en organizaciones privadas de Hermosillo, capital del estado de Sonora, Mxico. Mediante una combinacin de tcnicas de investigacin cualitativas y cuantitativas se recoge evidencia vlida que da cuenta de la segregacin ocupacional y la discriminacin salarial de que son objeto las mujeres. Hace un recuento de las dificultades que ellas enfrentan para ascender en la estructura ocupacional, a pesar de contar en promedio con mejores indicadores de capital humano que sus pares varones. El trabajo reconstruye trayectorias laborales de tres trabajadoras, identifica los tipos de barreras que enfrentaron para entrar al mercado laboral y, posteriormente, para avanzar en la estructura de puestos hacia la cima jerrquica, hasta alcanzar gerencias de mediano nivel; estn consientes de que existe un 'techo de cristal' o de concreto a travs del cual ven la cima de sus organizaciones, pero les impide avanzar para alcanzarla. La adscripcin de las mujeres al mbito de lo privado, se constituye en todos los casos como la princial barrera a sortear, independientemente de su edad, clase o estado civil.
