La presente investigacin estudia el proceso de cambio sociocultural que se deriva de la conformacin de unidades productivas de maquila o ensamblado de ropa, incrustadas en espacios domsticos rurales, creadas por la iniciativa de mujeres. Se analiza el surgimiento de un empresariado rural femenino que est cobrando importancia en Mxico, a partir de la dcada del setenta hasta nuestros das. La investigacin de campo para dar cuenta de las repercusiones socioeconmicas y culturales de la expansin de las microempresas de maquila de ropa en zonas rurales, se realiz en la poblacin de Santiago Cuaula, Tlaxcala, Mxico. Desde la segunda mitad del siglo XX, surgen dos actividades econmicas: la produccin artesanal de ojos de vidrio en los aos cincuenta, y quince aos despus, la costura de prendas de vestir. Con este estudio se muestra el empoderamiento de las mujeres en la maquila de ropa aunque todava la importancia de la participacin masculina siga siendo determinante para las relaciones empresariales.
