Die Arbeit befasst sich mit sprachlichen Variationserscheinungen in einer Region der deutschen Schweiz, die von einem alten sprachlichkulturellen Gegensatz geprgt ist. Neben den Gegensatz zwischen ost und westschweizerdeutschen Mundartmerkmalen stellt sich neuerdings als dritte sprachbestimmende Kraft die neuhochdeutsche Schriftsprache. Das Untersuchungsmaterial stammt aus einer ausgedehnten Feldaufnahme (240 Befragungen an 5 Orten); in einem besonderen Abschnitt werden auch Texte aus der lokalen Mundartliteratur herangezogen.
