Beautiful, tender, haunting, and extremely excitingThis is the memoir of famed author, explorer, guide, trader, and historian of the Blackfoot Indians, James Willard Schultz. Here he tells of his life with the Blackfeet and his marriage to a Blackfoot woman, whom he deeply loved. From 1880 to 1903, Schultz lived the life of a Blackfoot Indian with Natahki and her people. During this time, he began writing for magazines, at times running a trading post, and working as a guide in the West.He met historian, writer, and naturalist, George Bird Grinnell, who encouraged him to write this heartfelt and important memoir. As an ethnography of a people and a time it is invaluable.Though he would marry again after Natahkis death, Schultz eventually went back to live near the Native peoples hed come to love and is buried in the traditional ground of Natahkis people. You wont read another memoir like it.Every memoir of the American West provides us with another view of the migration that changed the country forever.

I picked up 'My Life as an Indian' because I've always been fascinated by diverse cultures. The annotations really helped me understand the context behind the stories better, and the expanded sections are a treasure trove of information. It's great for anyone looking to learn more about Indian life!

Not What I Expected
I was hoping for a more narrative-driven book. While the annotations are informative, they detract from the flow of reading for me. I think this would be better suited for those who enjoy deep analysis rather than a casual read.

Perfect for Cultural Studies
As a student of anthropology, this book is gold! The expanded and annotated versions give so much depth to the narratives. I love how it opens a window into Indian traditions and everyday life. Definitely a must-have for anyone serious about cultural studies.

Interesting but Dense
This book has a ton of information, but it can be a bit overwhelming at times. The expanded annotations are insightful, yet some sections felt a bit too academic for my taste. Still, I appreciate the effort to provide a rich understanding of Indian culture.
