The Capuchin Soup Kitchen has provided meals to the hungry of Detroit since November 1929. Currently, it provides about 55,000 meals per month from two dining rooms. Inspired by one Capuchin brother's daily conversations with his 'flock,' My Name Is . . . gives a glimpse into the lives of people that are largely ignored or misunderstood by our society.Over a yearlong period, more than 140 visitors to the soup kitchen had their portraits taken by five different photographers, and around 70 of these people were interviewed. Their resulting stories show the life and vitality of those who walk the streets and sidewalks of Detroit and give a name and face to the oftenused term, 'Poor of Detroit.' My Name Is . . . matches stories to portraits and thus gives life to the numbers behind the soup kitchen, like the number of meals provided, the number of people who use the shower program, and the number of families that received a pantry pack, by letting those people tell their own stories in their words. My Name Is . . . is a powerful testament to the strength, hope, and courage of Detroit's neediest residents and the dedicated social service providers that assist them. For anyone interested in sociology or urban issues, this volume will be a moving and informative read.
