Leo Perutz gilt mit Der Marques de Bolibar , Der Meister des jngsten Tages und Sankt PetriSchnee als einer der bedeutendsten deutschsprachigen Erzhler fantastischer Geschichten. Mit dem Roman Nachts unter der steinernen Brcke , den er in der Emigration in Tel Aviv verfasste, kehrte der 1882 in Prag geborene Schriftsteller zur Sttte seiner Kindheit zurck. 1951 als 'Meils Gut' vollendet, hatte Perutz anfangs Schwierigkeiten, einen Verleger fr den Roman zu finden. Als er 1953 endlich erschien, erhielt er ausnahmslos gute Kritiken (Perutz 'wahrscheinlich reifster und eindrucksvollster Roman', so F. Torberg). Ein Publikumserfolg indes wurde Nachts unter der steinernen Brcke nicht. Vielleicht ist der Grund dafr, dass Perutz in der Geschichte einer verbotenen Liebe zwischen dem bhmischen Knig Rudolf II. und der mrchenhaft schnen Esther, Frau des 'Meisljud', sein zentrales Thema, nmlich die Vorstellung eines Zwischenreiches aus Bewusstsein und Traum, eine hhere Wirklichkeit, in einer atmosphrisch dichten Szenerie schildert, die nicht selten in eine lyrische Epik abgleitet. Aber genau das macht die vierzehn Episoden aus dem Prag der Alchimisten und Golems, dem 16. und 17.
