Este ensayo analiza las particularidades del proceso histrico que vivi Maracaibo en los inicios de la Independencia venezolana.Es de inters para la historiografa venezolana y latinoamericana profundizar en el anlisis de la realidad que explica la reaccin de una "ciudad disidente" como Maracaibo, cuya lite prefiri seguir los lineamientos de la Regencia, elegir su diputado para las Cortes de Cdiz y defender su autonoma, antes que aceptar la propuesta de la emancipacin caraquea. Se pretende esclarecer si la lite maracaibera fue realmente disidente del movimiento caraqueo por inercia histrica, larga herencia hispnica, o su actuacin estuvo apegada a la legitimidad del momento como una opcin poltica para reafirmar su autonoma dentro de la monarqua. La investigacin se ubica en la actual corriente historiogrfica europea e hispanoamericana que sale al paso a los tradicionales anlisis sustentados en una visin fctica y localista, ignorando la amplitud temporal y espacial del proceso;se centra en el conocimiento que aporta el estudio comparado de la actitud de Maracaibo y Caracas ante la Independencia y su vinculacin con los acontecimientos en el mundo hispnica.
