Creer esto alienta posturas como la de Donald Trump, quien sugiere tapiar a nuestro pas por completo y pasarnos la factura de nuestro encierro.Sin embargo, como advierten Carmen Boullosa y Mike Wallace, la causa principal de la narcoviolencia fue la decisin del gobierno estadounidense, tomada a principios del siglo xx, de prohibir el consumo de drogas a sus ciudadanos. Cuando stos recurrieron al mercado negro en el que los mexicanos han jugado un papel decisivo Estados Unidos no tuvo la voluntad, o la manera, de detener la importacin, y orill al gobierno de Mxico a servirle de socio menor en su proyecto prohibicionista, con resultados desastrosos.El precio que han pagado los estadounidenses por la prohibicin ha sido la encarcelacin masiva (sobre todo de afroamericanos); el que han pagado los mexicanos ha sido mucho mayor: el enorme nmero de muertos y desaparecidos, y un tsunami de crimen y corrupcin. Ya que la guerra contra las drogas fue una creacin conjunta, la solucin slo puede ser bilateral. La experiencia apunta a la legalizacin, a tratar a las adicciones como un asunto de salud pblica y no como un crimen.
