William Gass afirma a menudo que un aspecto importante de sus motivaciones artsticas responde a su deseo de elaborar obras ntegras, sistemas semnticos completos y autosuficientes cuyo objetivo ltimo no sea reflejar o reproducir la realidad, aunque sta sea una parte esencial de su proceso de gnesis; la tendencia analtica y autorreferencial de sus obras, as como su consciente antimimetismo, se reflejan en su peculiar mtodo compositivo. Lo que este trabajo propone es que William Gass concibe para cada una de sus piezas narrativas algo semejante a un mensaje global y simple, una afirmacin sobre el lenguaje hecha en forma de alegora metaficcional. Convertido en objetivo del proceso artstico, y no en simple vehculo de transmisin de una narracin, el lenguaje es el protagonista de un evento literario de naturaleza tropolgica con el que Gass retoma, desde planteamientos esencialmente postmodernos, la clsica y utpica bsqueda de la expresin renovada y sublime que mantuvieron los grandes maestros del modernismo.
