Diversas evidencias muestran la expresin de receptores muscarnicos y nicotnicos en las clulas ciliadas y en las neuronas aferentes del vestbulo. stos receptores participan en la modulacin eferente de la actividad elctrica de las neuronas aferentes. Sin embargo los mecanismos celulares que subyacen a este control postsinptico en las neuronas se desconocen. El propsito de este trabajo fue demostrar que la activacin de los receptores muscarnicos en las neuronas aferentes vestibulares inhibe una corriente de potasio tipo M, lo cual modifica la actividad elctrica de las neuronas aferentes modulando as su ganancia ante la entrada sinptica proveniente de las clulas ciliadas y su actividad elctrica en respuesta a estmulos mecnicos. Nuestros resultados indican que las neuronas aferentes vestibulares con mayor dimetro somtico (muy probablemente las neuronas con terminales en cliz) expresan la corriente IK,M y que la modulacin de esta corriente por activacin de los receptores muscarnicos constituye un mecanismo celular fundamental mediante el cual el sistema eferente controla la ganancia del sistema aferente en el vestbulo.
