Product Description The New Design series celebrates some of the finest new graphic design talents each featured city has to offer. This citybycity tour is the insider's guide to dozens of design firms that are making an impact on the industry. Selected by designers for designers, the work in these pages reveals what makes graphic design tick in the city of Paris. Fresh, new, and filled with vitality, this is a valuable collection for all design enthusiasts; from advertising and media aficionados, to artists, educators, students, and all those with a strong interest in contemporary graphic design. About the Author Edward M. Gomez's background is in philosophy and design. He is a former cultural correspondent for TIME in New York, Paris, and Tokyo, and series editor of Metropolitan Home. A contributing editor of Art & Antiques magazine, Gomez has also written on art and design for the New York Times, Metropolis, ARTnews, the Japan Times, Cond Nast Traveler, Eye, and Raw Vision. He is one of the contributing authors of Le dictionnaire de la civilisation japonaise (Hazan Editions). Excerpt. Reprinted by permission. All rights reserved. Trained as a paper, Michel Bouvet decided, after graduating from the Ecole des Beaux Arts, to devote his talent to the arts of the poster. Inspired by San Francisco's psychedelicposter art of the Sixties, and by the politically changed Czech posters of the Prague Spring, Bouvet has long been concerned with the role of the artist in society. Working in the French tradition of the affiche cuturelle literally, the "culture poster" which dates back to Henri de ToulouseLautrec's commercial art, Bouvet brings a painterly touch to eyecatching designs rich in visual puns and carefully chosen imagesymbols. The apparent simplicity of his designs belies his habit of extensive research. Bouvet exploits many media and techniques, including colored pencils, gouache, collage, reworked photocopies, photomontage, and hand drawn lettering. Among his honors, Bouvet has twice received France's Grand Prix de I'Affiche. His awardwinning posters have been exhibited in solo and group shows around the world.
