Der Vorschlag des Rektors seiner Volksschule fhrt den Verfasser als zehnjhrigen Pimpf 1942 nach einem erfolgreichen Auswahlverfahren auf eine Nationalpolitische Erziehungsanstalt (Napola). Der Wandel des Lebens vom behteten Elternhaus in ein solches Internat erffnet ihm eine unbekannte, neue Welt, mit hohen geistigen wie krperlichen Ansprchen. Aus einer unpolitischen Familie kommend, wchst er dort in eine von Disziplin geprgte Lebensform. Der Schulunterricht mit allen Fchern eines neusprachlichen Gymnasiums dominiert, ergnzt durch vielfltigen Sport und Anstze vormilitrischer Ausbildung. Innerhalb der geforderten Disziplin bleibt viel Raum fr Freizeit, Spiel, fr die gefrderte musische Erziehung, Reisen, Landdienst sowie die Teilnahme an kulturellen Veranstaltungen. Aus der ursprnglich vorgesehenen Dokumentation von Fakten erwuchs die vorliegende Erzhlung mit zahlreichen Einzelheiten ber Erleben und Geschehen einer Schulklasse der NPEA Bensberg und deren Einrichtungen in den damaligen knapp drei Jahren. Der Text vermeidet Wertungen oder Kommentare. Im zeitlichen Ablauf nimmt die Schilderung ab September 1942 Bezug auf die sich ndernde Kriegslage und ihre Einflsse auf den Alltag der Anstalt, bis zu deren Ende und Auflsung Anfang April 1945.
