This is the first comprehensive treatment of Nietzsches philosophy of art to appear in English. Julian Young argues that Nietzsches thought about art can only be understood in the context of his wider philosophy. In particular, he discusses the dramatic changes in Nietzschean aesthetics against the background of the celebrated themes of the death of God, eternal recurrence, and the idea of the Ubermensch. Young then divides Nietzsches career, and his philosophy of art, into four distinct phases, but suggests that these phases describe a circle. An attempt at worldaffirmation is made in the central phases, but Nietzsche is predominantly influenced at the beginning and end of his career by a Schopenhauerian pessimism. At the beginning and end art is important because it redeems us from life.

Nietzsche's 'Philosophy of Art' is a captivating read. The way he intertwines aesthetics with human experience really struck a chord with me. I found it insightful and thought-provoking, perfect for anyone interested in philosophy or the arts.

A bit dense for beginners
I bought this for my art theory class, but I have to admit, some parts are pretty heavy. It’s a deep dive into Nietzsche's ideas, which I appreciate, but it might be tough for newcomers to philosophy. Still, worth a read with some patience.

Not what I expected
I thought I was getting a more straightforward guide to Nietzsche's thoughts on art. Instead, it's pretty dense and filled with complex concepts. If you're not well-versed in philosophy, it could be challenging. I was hoping for something more accessible.

Engaging and profound
This book really dives into the essence of art from Nietzsche's perspective. I loved how he challenges conventional ideas and opens up new avenues of thought. It's definitely a book I'll revisit in the future, highly engaging for those who enjoy philosophical discussions!
