Product Description This anthology contains nineteen of the most popular Gilbert and Sullivan classics arranged in easily sightreadable versions for beginning to intermediate classical guitarists. All the favorites are here, ranging from sentimental ballads such as Little Buttercup , Willow, TitWillow and There Grew a Little Flower , to more uptempo patter type pieces such as Oh! A Private Buffoon , Kind Sir You Cannot Have the Heart and A Policeman s Lot . The aim has been to provide both a useful teaching resource and a lighthearted alternative to the more serious music of the classical guitar repertoire. All the pieces lend themselves extremely well to the common idiomatic textures of the classical guitar. A variety of melody and accompaniment styles are employed, including block chords, arpeggio patterns and passages of doublestopped thirds and sixths. A number of the pieces are in easy first position format, while others explore the common higher positions. The standard guitar keys are utilized (C, G, D, A, E) but there are occasional more challenging temporary modulations to difficult keys, such as E flat major. There are also instances of dropD tuning, which is often required in classical guitar playing. About the Author Mark Marrington (b. 1971), B.A. (Hons), M. mus., Ph. D., is a guitarist, teacher, arranger and composer based in Leeds, United Kingdom. Between 1996 and 2000 he worked as a freelance musician, running a private guitar teaching practice for many private individuals and publishers, including Cambridge University Press and Boosey and Hawkes. In 199899 he coauthored Guitar from Scratch with Christopher Norton for Boosey and Hawkes and in 200001 taught classical guitar in schools in Halifax, West Yorkshire. During this period he perfected his skills as an arranger for guitar ensemble, producing a large number of arrangements of guitar music for children. Most recently, in November 2002 he was awarded a Ph. D. for his research into the music of the British composer, Denis ApIvor, by the University of Leeds. He currently lectures on various undergraduate programs at the Leeds College of Music, specializing in composition and arranging, music theory, and history of popular and western art music.
