Es schien niitzlich, Belege dieser Art zu sam meln und den Versuch zu unternehmen, sie in einem groBeren Zusammen hang zu interpretieren. Eine Reihe von Phllnomenen, die sich auf die Wahrung Agyptens in by zantinischer Zeit beziehen, ist noch immer nicht gedeutet. Dementsprechend fehIt bis heute auch eine systematische Darstellung der Wahrung dieser Zeit. Der Zuwachs an Papyri kann, so scheint es, zur Klarung dieser Fragen bei tragen. Andererseits ist es durch das Erscheinen von W. Hahn's Moneta Im perii Byzantini auch ffir AuBenstehende moglich geworden, sich einen Uber 1 blick iiber die Miinzgeschichte jener Zeit zu verschaffen. Unsere Untersuchungen verfolgen zwei Ziele. Zum einen richten sie sich auf die Rekonstruktion der metrologischen Systeme, die in den verschiedenen Epochen Geltung hatten. Dieser Versuch, Grundlinien der historischen Ent wicklung aufzuzeigen, enthalt notwendigerweise hypothetische Elemente. Es zeigt sich, daB die zahlreichen, aber in der Regel doch wenig aussagekraftigen Papyrusbelege ffir dieses Unterfangen noch nicht ganz ausreichen. Ein zweites Ziel ist es, die im Zahlungsverkehr geltenden Usancen an ausgewahIten Beispielen darzustellen. Auch hier bleibt noch viel unsicher, besonders die Interpretation der in den oxyrhynchitischen Urkunden der zweiten Halfte des 6. Jahrhunderts belegten Standards (B'I1J.l.oc1.oC ~')'Yoc, iBtmnx:oc ~')'Yoc, ~')'Yoc 'AA.e~ClvBpeiClC) macht Schwierigkeiten. A. C.
