The French tradition of utopian writing is a constant struggle between the hope for social change and a cynical belief that it will never happen. The essays in the volume trace French utopian writing from the seventeenth century to the present. The book opens with essays on political utopias, starting with Montesquieu. An article on the establishment of penal colonies is a fine example of a utopian theory which produces a nightmare dystopia. The next section covers nineteenth century proposals made by novelists and poets. The third part is concerned with the modern novel. The last four essays look at utopian dreams in modern French society from the films of Jacques Tati to the fantasy United States imagined by teenagers in the slums of Paris.
