Algunos historiadores estiman que en una pequea porcin del archipilago cubano, Isla de Pinos, se inspir el narrador escocs Robert Louis Stevenson para escribir su clebre novela de aventura La isla del tesoro, publicada en Londres en 1883. El argumento de los estudiosos se basa, entre otros elementos, en el hecho real de que la nsula constituy durante cuatro siglos refugio de piratas y contrabandistas. De su existencia se sabe que ese paraso, devenido isla de leyendas, fue bautizado el 12 de junio de 1494 por Cristbal Coln, como La Evangelista. Apuntan los investigadores que la primera referencia a la presencia de piratas y corsarios en suelo pinero data de 1543, cuando el francs Jean Francois La Roque lleg a ella y repar sus naves. A partir de entonces este lugar comenz a utilizarse como apostadero por parte de los aventureros del mar, quienes esperaban aqu las embarcaciones, que venan cargadas de riquezas del continente americano, para atacarlas.
