Las encefalopatas espongiformes transmisibles pertenecen a un grupo de enfermedades neurodegenerativas en animales y en el hombre que pueden transmitirse experimentalmente. Entre ellas destaca la Encefalopata Espongiforme Bovina de la que se ha diagnosticado ms de 170000 casos en Europa. Actualmente, la deteccin de PrPSc es el principio bsico para el diagnstico de EETs. La herramienta ms sensible para la deteccin de infectividad en muestras sospechosas es el uso de bioensayos basados en ratones. En este trabajo se describe la generacin de lneas de ratones transgnicos que expresan diferentes niveles del gen de la PrP bovina (protena homloga a la del inculo). Tras la infeccin de estas lneas con priones bovinos, se observ degeneracin del sistema nervioso central en el 100% de los ratones inoculados. Adems, ratones transgnicos que expresan la PrP bovina con la insercin de un octapptido repetido mostraron diferencias durante el curso de la infeccin con EEB siendo ms susceptibles. Sin embargo, el empleo de cultivos celulares que expresan la PrP bovina no permite amplificar estos priones.
