Die Begriffe Verstehen und Bedeutung werden blicherweise auf die Bedeutungsintentionen der Erzeuger von Sinngebilden (z. B. uerungen, Texte, Handlungen) bezogen. Demnach versteht man etwa die Bedeutung einer uerung genau dann, wenn man erfat, was der Sprecher damit meinte. Der Autor wendet sich gegen diese subjektivistische Auffassung von Verstehen und Bedeutung, deren Spuren bis in die Habermas'sche Hermeneutikrezeption und Gesellschaftstheorie nachweisbar sind. Im Anschlu an Gadamer, Popper, Toulmin und Luhmann entwickelt er ein Konzept objektiven Verstehens, das auf der Figur von Frage und Antwort bzw. Problem und Problemlsung grndet. Gezeigt wird, da Hermeneutik und funktionale Analyse gleichermaen auf der Anwendung dieser Grundfigur beruhen und deshalbzu einem einheitlichen Instrument geistes und sozialwissenschaftlicher Forschung verbunden werden knnen.
