Sigmund Freud (Prbor, 6 de mayo de 1856Londres, 23 de septiembre de 1939) fue un mdico neurlogo austriaco de origen judo, padre del psicoanlisis y una de las mayores figuras intelectuales del siglo XX. Su inters cientfico inicial como investigador se centr en el campo de la neurologa, derivando progresivamente sus investigaciones hacia la vertiente psicolgica de las afecciones mentales, de la que dara cuenta en su consultorio privado. Estudi en Pars con el neurlogo francs JeanMartin Charcot las aplicaciones de la hipnosis en el tratamiento de la histeria. De vuelta a la ciudad de Viena y en colaboracin con Josef Breuer desarroll el mtodo catrtico. Paulatinamente, reemplaz tanto la sugestin hipntica como el mtodo catrtico por la asociacin libre y la interpretacin de los sueos. De igual modo, la bsqueda inicial centrada en la rememoracin de los traumas psicgenos como productores de sntomas fue abriendo paso al desarrollo de una teora etiolgica de las neurosis ms diferenciada. Todo esto se convirti en el punto de partida del psicoanlisis, al que se dedic ininterrumpidamente el resto de su vida.
