El biodisel es un combustible renovable muy discutido y cuestionado, cuya produccin, mercado y comercializacin se estn desarrollando con muchas consideraciones y cautelas. Este biocombustible ofrece, globalmente, muchas posibilidades en un mundo cada vez ms exigente energtica y ambientalmente. Este reto obliga a trabajar de modo ms intenso, buscando espacios, materias primas y procesos que hagan esta alternativa ms viable social y econmicamente. El proceso de produccin de biodisel est basado en la reaccin de transesterificacin de aceites vegetales o grasas animales, con alcoholes de bajo peso molecular. En el presente trabajo se estudia la reaccin de transesterificacin de aceite de soja con metanol en condiciones supercrticas sin el empleo de catalizadores para la obtencin de biodisel. Este proceso tiene la ventaja, frente a los procesos catalticos, de que se pueden utilizar aceites usados con altos contenidos de cidos grasos libres y de agua. Adems, como no se usan catalizadores, no es necesario el lavado y filtrado de las fases y, por tanto, no se emiten efluentes contaminantes, de manera que el proceso es respetuoso con el medio ambiente.
