La prsente dition runit pour la premire fois les principaux ouvrages de Gobineau dont quelquesuns et non les moindres, comme l'Essai sur l'ingalit des races humaines, Trois ans en Asie, Les Religions et les philosophies dans l'Asie centrale, n'ont jamais fait l'objet d'une publication critique ni mme d'une rimpression srieusement annote. Nous avons d nous rsigner en exclure l'Histoire des Perses et l'Histoire d'Ottar Jarl, qui contiennent pourtant de belles et curieuses pages. Naturellement, il tait impossible de rditer ici les pomes de Gobineau que la maladresse de leur forme rend illisibles, ni ses romans de jeunesse, ni ses nombreux articles politiques et littraires, ni ses pamphlets, ni ses essais malheureux sur les cuniformes, ni son abondante correspondance. L'ensemble que nous avons retenu se distribue de faon la fois logique et chronologique. Le tome premier comprend, avec Scaramouche et Mademoiselle Irnois, exemples de Gobineau ses dbuts de conteur, et l'ample vision historique de l'Essai sur l'ingalit des races humaines, l'essentiel de l'oeuvre de Gobineau, jusqu' 1855.
