Oficio de tinieblas esta basada en un hecho historico: el levantamiento de los indios chamulas, en San Cristobal, en 1867. Este hecho culmino con la crucifixion de uno de estos indios al que proclamaron los amotinados como el Cristo Indigena. Por un momento, y por ese hecho, los chamulas se sintieron iguales a los blancos. Acerca de esta sublevacion casi no existen documentos. Los testimonios que pude recoger se resienten, como es logico, de partidismos mas o menos ingenuos. Intente penetrar en las circunstancias, entender los moviles y captar la psicologia de los personajes que intervinieron en estos acontecimientos. A medida que avanzaba, me di cuenta que la logica historica es absolutamente distinta de la logica literaria; abandone poco a poco el suceso real. Lo traslade de tiempo, a un tiempo que conocia mejor, la epoca de Cardenas, momento en el que, segun todas las apariencias, va a efectuarse la reforma agraria en Chiapas. Este hecho probable produce malestar entre los que poseen la tierra y los que aspiran a poseerla: entre los blancos y los indios.
