Although it was first published in 1936, Amos Aschbach Ettinger's classic biography of James Oglethorpe remains today the standard full length portrayal of the man who founded the colony of Georgia. This essay, never before published, won for Ettinger the Beit Prize competition at Oxford in 1929. In it, Ettinger provides the reader with a balanced and scholarly assessment of the life and achievements of James Oglethorpe.
