La costa norte de Puerto Rico est influenciada por las constantes tormentas y frentes fros del Atlntico Norte. La plataforma insular, en esta zona, es angosta comparada con la del resto de la Isla, por lo que la energa que transportan las olas no sufre disipacin significativa, por efectos de friccin de fondo, al acercarse a la lnea de costa. En este trabajo de hace un anlisis de las caractersticas del oleaje en la costa norte de Puerto Rico, donde se incluy la modelacin del oleaje, validacin del modelo SWAN (Simulating Wave Nearshore) a escalas ocenicas y la base para un sistema de pronstico en la Isla. Este documento corresponde a mi tesis del programa doctoral en Ciencias Marinas, en Oceanografa Fsica, del Departamento de Ciencias Marinas del Recinto Universitario de Mayagez de la Universidad de Puerto Rico (UPR). El documento incluye una descripcin de la zona de estudio, los modelos espectrales de tercera generacin y los procesos de generacin de oleaje de aguas profundas hasta que llega a la costa.
