The year is 1555. Young Rob Milburn is just seven years old, the son of a courageous English Reiverlandowner, living on the upper storey of the family's bastle house. One dark and fateful night, the place is raided by Scottish Reivers. Rob is abducted, having just seen his father axed, possiblly to death. The Reivers take the boy back to their home ground, across the border at Melrose, where they hand him over to the monks of the abbey. Some of the friars are as brutal as the Reivers, but they make him a lay brother, and he comes under the wing of the kindly Brother Daniel and thus begins to receive an education. But as he becomes absorbed in the life of the abbey, he retains a fierce loyalty to his family, and swears secretly that one day he will live up to it.
