The author (a good popular writ er but not an information specialist) says that he wanted to explore these online services without the associated expense and thus proposed this book as a vehicle. The gimmick here is a set of preaddressed cards that generate a password and credit towards initial use of the participating systems, but most of the vendors offer the same arrange ment to anyone who requests it. A ca veat to any librarian who does mail in the cards: online searching is not quite as simple as the author implies; costs quickly mount. Be prepared to pay the difference between charges incurred for time spent exploring'' and the amount credited to you. There are bet ter books available.
