Die Biographie des Grovaters des Autors, Richard Willy Schlieder, ist der Versuch, das Portrt eines Mannes zu zeichnen, der sich aus einfachsten Verhltnissen in Dresden stammend durch Flei und Redlichkeit zum Feinmechanikermeister emporgearbeitet hat: das Portrt eines gutmtigen Mannes, den der Autor in seinen spteren Lebensjahren noch kennen gelernt hat, dessen frherer Lebensweg jedoch durch Dokumente nur teilweise belegt ist. Umfangreiche Recherchen, nicht zuletzt in Dresden, waren daher erforderlich. Die Einflechtung historischer, lokaler wie berregionaler Ereignisse, Umstnde und Entwicklungen, wie sie der damalige "Mann auf der Strae" in der Regel als passiver Beobachter erlebte und wahrnahm, gibt dieser Biographie eine gewisse zeithistorische Dimension. Sie soll auch dazu beitragen, Verstndnis dafr zu entwickeln, dass die heutigen, scheinbar selbstverstndlichen Annehmlichkeiten unseres freiheitlichen, demokratischen Sozialstaates keineswegs vom Himmel gefallen sind, sondern am bisherigen Ende einer langjhrigen Entwicklung stehen. Unsere Vorfahren, die vor reichlich hundert Jahren einen in der Regel recht steinigen und entbehrungsvollen Weg gegangen sind, haben es verdient, dass man sich auch heute noch mit ihnen beschftigt und ihr Andenken in Ehren hlt. Ohne sie gbe es uns nicht.
