L'electromigraci s una tcnica usada per descontaminar sls, la qual consisteix a aplicar una diferncia de potencial entre dos elctrodes per fer que els ions del sl contaminat es desplacen cap als elctrodes de signe contrari. A ms, tenen lloc reaccions secundries, com, per exemple, la hidrlisi de l'aigua. L'oxidaci de l'aigua genera protons, els quals incrementen la solubilitat dels contaminants i beneficien el procs de descontaminaci; tanmateix, la reducci de l'aigua genera hidroxils, els quals disminueixen la solubilitat dels contaminants, que poden precipitar dins del sl sense poder ser extrets. Per solucionar aquest problema, se sol afegir cids a l'electrlit o es poden usar membranes o resines per retenir els hidroxils; totes aquestes propostes incrementen el cost del procs de descontaminaci.
