El objetivo de este trabajo es encontrar la configuracin ptima para un problema estructural dado en un dominio espacial continuo. Por configuracin ptima entendemos, reducir al mnimo el volumen de material empleado y maximizar la rigidez de la estructura ante las combinaciones de cargas supuestas por el diseador. Se propusieron dos problemas, encontrar la armadura de un puente y la armadura de un invernadero. El procedimiento empleado para el diseo elstico es el propuesto por el American Institute of Steel Construction. En ambos problemas se busca la optimizacin de la topologa, la geometra y las dimensiones de la armadura, en la misma corrida. Para poder combinar estos tres tipos de optimizacin se emplearon Algoritmos Genticos (AG).Esta tcnica se desprende de la llamada computacin evolutiva, de la cual surgen las estrategias evolutivas, la programacin gentica, la coevolucin y los algoritmos genticos; todas ellas se basan en el principio evolutivo de Darwin, la supervivencia del ms apto. Se encuentran soluciones prcticas y con mejoras en sus caractersticas estructurales.
