On First Principles by Origen of Alexandria, written around 220230 AD, is one of the most important and contentious works of early Christianity. It provoked controversy when written, provoked further debate when translated into Latin by Rufinus in the fourth century, and was the subject, together with its author, of condemnation in the sixth century. As a result, the work no longer survives intact in the original Greek. We only have the complete work in the Latin translation of Rufinus, and a few extensive passages preserved in Greek by being excerpted into the Philokalia of Basil of Caesarea and Gregory of Nazianzus.John Behr offers a translation of one of the most important texts from early Christianity. He includes an invaluable introduction, which provides a clear structure of the work with significant implications for how the text is to be read and for understanding the character of theology in the early Christian tradition.

I picked up the Origen's First Principles Reader's Edition for my theology class, and it's been an incredible resource. The layout is easy to read, and I love that it’s part of the Oxford Early Christian Texts. This edition really makes ancient concepts accessible for modern readers!

Disappointed with the Quality
I had high hopes for this book, given its reputation, but mine arrived with several pages wrinkled and the spine cracking after just a few readings. I was hoping for a better quality product from Oxford. Really disappointed with this purchase, to be honest.

Solid but Lacks Some Context
The content is fantastic, but I found certain parts a bit hard to grasp without additional context. I expected more explanatory notes from the Oxford series, especially in a Reader's Edition. Still, a valuable book for anyone interested in early Christian theology.

Beautiful Edition but Arrived Late
I really love the look and feel of this Readers Edition—it's beautifully bound and makes a great addition to my bookshelf. However, it took almost a week longer to arrive than expected, which was a bit frustrating. Worth the wait, but a heads-up would’ve been nice!
